Mbappe takes home second Golden Boot, Spain sweeps World Cup awards

Spain has claimed the 2026 World Cup trophy, defeating Argentina 1-0 in a closely contested final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute, marking a significant moment for Spanish football and potentially ushering in a new era.

Torres described the winning goal as a collective effort, stating, "It was a goal scored by 47 million people – it wasn’t even mine or from the 26 players. It was destined to happen; it was meant to be a winner." Despite Spain's dominance throughout the match, they broke the deadlock late in extra time in front of a crowd of 80,000.

While Spain celebrated their ultimate prize, individual accolades were also distributed. France's Kylian Mbappe was awarded the Golden Boot, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with 10 goals, surpassing Lionel Messi's eight. Mbappe also holds the record for the most World Cup goals with 22. This marks his second Golden Boot win.

Spain's midfield maestro Rodri was honored with the Golden Ball, recognizing him as the tournament's best player. Despite not scoring or assisting, Rodri led in passes completed, distance run, and player involvements, playing a crucial role in limiting Messi's influence during the final. Messi received the Silver Ball, and Mbappe the Bronze.

Further individual honors for Spain included the Golden Glove award, presented to goalkeeper Unai Simon, recognizing his outstanding performance throughout the tournament.
