McDonald's Plans for Retie Restaurant Meet Local Resistance

Fast-food giant McDonald's has submitted a permit application to build a new restaurant in Retie, located in Belgium's Kempen region, reigniting concerns among local residents and authorities.

This marks the latest effort by the American chain to establish a foothold in the area, following previous rejected applications in Brecht, Bouwel, and Herselt. The news has generated significant unease on social media, with many residents expressing apprehension about the potential arrival of a McDonald's.

Koen Claessens, the acting mayor of Retie and a member of the Nieuw Retie party, acknowledged the community's concerns. "Many local residents are worried and do not want a new restaurant here," Claessens stated. However, he emphasized that the process is still in its early stages. The application has not been officially finalized, and the public inquiry period, during which residents can submit objections, is set to begin in August and will last for one month.

Claessens also noted that the proposed location might not align with the municipality's development plans. "The planned McDonald's location is in an area where we, as a municipality, want to focus on small-scale hospitality and businesses that support our village," he explained. "Additionally, we want to ensure our village remains easily accessible for everyone."

McDonald's has assured that the impact on traffic will be minimal, citing the existing high traffic volume at the chosen site and the ability to integrate with current mobility flows. The municipality, however, maintains a cautious stance, stating that a final decision will only be made after all procedures are completed and a thorough review of the public inquiry findings. The company's application will be critically examined against the backdrop of the town's planning objectives and the community's concerns regarding environmental factors and local accessibility.
