McTominay’s heart procedure ‘a complete success’

Napoli say Scott McTominay’s heart procedure “was a complete success,” and expect the Scotland midfielder to return to training later this month.

The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital on Tuesday morning. The minimally invasive operation treats irregular heart rhythms. Napoli said McTominay will rest for two weeks before resuming training.

A mild benign arrhythmia was discovered after McTominay was substituted in the 56th minute of Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on Aug. 30. The club had expected the former Manchester United player to return to action after the international break in early October.

When his heart issue was announced, McTominay wrote on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won't take long.” His condition also comes as Scotland prepares for Sebastien Pocognoli’s first four matches as head coach, with games against Slovenia, North Macedonia and Switzerland scheduled for late September and early October.

An arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly or irregularly. Cardiac ablation uses heat or cold energy to create tiny scars that block faulty electrical signals and help restore a typical heartbeat.
