Mecklenburg-Vorpommern hires hundreds of teachers, but shortage persists

The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has taken steps to address its teacher shortage by hiring 500 new educators for the current school year, bringing the total number of new hires since January to 690. Education Minister Simone Oldenburg stated these figures are comparable to the previous year's recruitment efforts.

However, Oldenburg acknowledged that these new hires do not eliminate the ongoing challenge. The ministry projects a need to fill around 3,600 teaching positions over the next five years. This demand significantly outstrips the expected supply, as only an estimated 2,700 teaching graduates are anticipated to complete their studies during the same period.

However, they must not disguise the fact that we will continue to have a shortage of teachers in the coming years.

To bridge this gap, the remaining 900 positions will need to be filled by individuals entering the profession through alternative pathways, often referred to as 'lateral entrants'. Universities have revamped their teacher training programs, incorporating more practical experience during studies, in an effort to attract more young people to the profession.

The state government is also implementing measures such as streamlining application processes and offering guaranteed employment after the preparatory service (Referendariat). Additional incentives are being provided for trainee teachers who choose to complete their preparatory service in rural areas, aiming to encourage a more even distribution of educators across the state.
