Medea's Vengeance Echoes in Modern Slovak Theatre

The Slovak National Theatre is staging "Pri močiari mačiek" (At the Cat Marsh), a contemporary adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Medea by Irish playwright Marina Carr. The play, directed by Matúš Bachynca, explores themes of betrayal and vengeance through the character of Hester Swanová, a member of the Irish travelling community.

Hester, portrayed by Táňa Pauhofová, faces ostracism and prejudice from local society after her partner, Cartago Kilbride, leaves her for a wealthier woman. The narrative draws parallels between Hester's plight and the myth of Medea, who killed her children after being abandoned by Jason. The play delves into Hester's internal struggle as she grapples with injustice and fights to reclaim her happiness, even if it means self-destruction or harming others.

Pauhofová delivers a powerful performance, shifting between various emotional states to depict Hester's isolation and inner turmoil. The production highlights the societal prejudices against the travelling community, as Hester is pressured by her partner's family to relinquish her love, home, and leave permanently. Despite their attempts to bribe her with money, Hester refuses to yield, showcasing her resilience and determination.

The play's themes resonate with contemporary issues, demonstrating how ancient predestination can transform into tragic life outcomes in the present day. Carr's work has been staged in Slovakia before, with Bachynca having previously directed her play "Dievča na oltári" (The Girl on the Altar). Other productions of Carr's plays, such as "Hekuba" (Hecuba) and "Portia Coughlan," have also been staged in Slovakia, indicating a growing interest in her dramatic interpretations of classical myths.
