Media: Ursula von der Leyen to Bring More Money for Greenland

Ursula von der Leyen is bringing more money to Greenland. The European Commission president is expected to announce an additional 200 million euros in support during her visit this weekend, the Financial Times reports.

The new funding would come on top of the 225 million euros already allocated by the European Union for Greenland during the 2021-2027 period. The European Commission also proposed doubling its support when the next long-term EU budget begins in 2028.

Under that proposal, the Commission would set aside 530 million euros specifically for cooperation with Greenland between 2028 and 2034. Across the seven-year period, that amounts to nearly 4 billion Danish kroner.

Von der Leyen will make the official visit on Sept. 6-7 alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The two leaders are expected to meet Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen in Nuuk. The trip had been scheduled for March but was postponed after Denmark called a parliamentary election.
