Mediator Pakistan says US-Iran talks ongoing as foes trade attacks

Pakistan is actively mediating ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, aiming to de-escalate tensions and address issues surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil and gas transit route. The Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman, Tahir Andrabi, confirmed these talks were progressing, despite a significant escalation in hostilities.

The U.S. military announced it had "successfully completed a heavy wave of strikes against Iran," targeting dozens of Revolutionary Guard positions in response to recent attacks, including one on Jordan. This retaliatory action followed a brief pause in fighting that was intended to facilitate diplomatic efforts.

Pakistan had helped to broker a deal between the warring sides laying the groundwork for negotiations on a permanent resolution, and Andrabi said it was doing its "utmost to bring all parties back" to technical talks under the agreement.

Meanwhile, the situation remains volatile. Jordan reported intercepting Iranian missiles for a second consecutive day, and Kuwait confirmed a fatality and material damage from an Iranian strike on a building belonging to a Chinese company. Iran's Revolutionary Guards also reported that two oil tankers attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz, with U.S. support, turned back after one caught fire, underscoring the precariousness of the region's security.
