Mediterranean Games: Tamberi, Tortu, Pilato, and Sainz-Llaguno Among the Stars

The Mediterranean Games, set to commence in Taranto, Italy, on August 21, promises a spectacular display of athletic prowess, with a formidable Italian team poised to compete on home soil. The event, running until September 3, will feature 498 Italian athletes, many of whom are decorated Olympians and world champions.

Leading the charge for Italy will be sprinter Filippo Tortu, a gold medalist in the 4x100m relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, who will serve as the flag bearer. He is joined by boxing's Olympic bronze medalist Irma Testa. The athletics team also boasts high jump sensation Gianmarco Tamberi, fresh off his continental achievements, and hammer thrower Sara Fantini, a silver medalist at the recent European Championships. Middle-distance runner Micol Majori, who secured a bronze in the 5000 meters, further bolsters the track and field squad.

In the swimming events, home favorite Benedetta Pilato, the reigning world champion in the 50m breaststroke, will be a top contender. She will be joined by Alberto Razzetti, a silver medalist in the 400m individual medley, and Chiara Tarantino, a key member of the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team. Cycling will be represented by multiple world champions Martina Fidanza and Rachele Barbieri, while artistic gymnastics will feature Paris 2024 silver medalist Angela Andreoli.

The Italian contingent also includes wrestling's Abraham De Jesus Conyedo Ruano, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, and strong teams in shooting and skeet. However, the Italian athletes will face stiff international competition. Among the key international rivals are Egypt's Mohamed El-Sayed, a bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympics in fencing, and Bosnia's Amel Tuka, a multiple-time World Championship medalist in the 800 meters.
