Melania Trump has maintained an unusually low public profile for the past month, a period described as "strange" by a US expert, particularly as the midterm elections approach. Her last known public appearance was on July 19, when she attended the World Cup final in New Jersey with her husband and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Since that appearance, the former first lady has been absent from several significant events. She did not attend the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham in late July, nor was she present at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner or a ceremony honoring American soldiers killed in the war against Iran. This absence is notable given the typical visibility expected of a former first lady, especially during politically charged times.

Emma Ricknell, an associate professor of political science at Linné University, expressed surprise at Melania Trump's lack of public engagement. "It's strange that she is not involved in more contexts," Ricknell commented, noting that Melania Trump remains popular within certain voter demographics. Ricknell suggested that the current political agenda, which focuses on heavy topics like international trade and ongoing wars, might not be a comfortable fit for her public persona.

Compared to Donald Trump's first term, Melania Trump's public appearances in 2026 have been significantly fewer. A senior advisor reportedly stated that she "prioritizes results over visibility." This approach aligns with her past tendency to spend considerable time away from the White House, often at Trump Tower in New York or Mar-a-Lago in Florida. Ricknell also speculated that Melania Trump's background as a celebrity and former model might make it challenging to project an image of a first lady who "truly influences" policy, coupled with a potentially strained relationship with the media.
