Melih Gökçek’s son and daughter-in-law appear at courthouse in investigation

Ahmet Gökçek and his wife, Hülya Gökçek, arrived at an Ankara courthouse to give statements in an investigation involving former Ankara Metropolitan Municipality mayor Melih Gökçek and his family.

The investigation began after Cumhuriyet writer Murat Ağırel alleged that the family had established a company called Hamag in Germany, transferred millions of euros out of Turkey through unofficial channels and invested the money in real estate. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation on its own initiative.

Melih Gökçek gave his statement to prosecutors two days earlier. After the roughly two-hour procedure, he told reporters: “There is a famous saying: You jump once, grasshopper; you jump twice, and on the third time you are caught. I have jumped over 500 investigations, 500 times. There is no matter on which I have not given a statement.”

His son and daughter-in-law entered the courthouse through a side entrance because they did not want to be filmed.
