Memphis Depay accuses Corinthians of breaking contract agreement, vows legal action

Memphis Depay has publicly accused Brazilian club Corinthians of failing to honor a contract extension agreement, a move that leaves the 32-year-old forward seeking legal action.

Depay expressed deep disappointment, stating that an agreement for a two-year contract extension had been reached with the club's president, as well as its sports, legal, and financial departments. Corinthians, however, announced that the Dutch player would not continue with the team, citing "exclusively financial" reasons and the necessity to safeguard the club's fiscal well-being.

Depay's contract concluded at the end of July. Brazilian media reports suggest the club owes the player approximately 42 million reais (about $8 million), excluding interest. The former Barcelona and Atlético Madrid player vowed to defend his interests, promising a public statement and assuring that this "unacceptable behavior" would not go unpunished.

Corinthians President Osmar Stabile is expected to address the situation in a press conference. Depay's tenure at the club saw him score 20 goals in 79 matches, contributing to three titles: the Campeonato Paulista and Copa do Brasil in 2025, and the Supercopa Rei in 2026.
