Mendoza: Over 20,000 tourists flock to snow; two ski resorts to open Tuesday

Mendoza, Argentina, welcomed over 20,000 tourists this past weekend, drawn by the allure of winter snow during the school holidays. Visitors flocked to the Andean foothills, seeking snowy landscapes, though extreme weather and ongoing road maintenance limited access to areas closer to the provincial border.

Many tourists aimed for the prime ski resorts like Penitentes and Los Puquios, but were restricted to Polvaredas and Punta de Vacas, approximately 10 kilometers from the main winter centers. However, this situation is set to change. The concessionary companies confirmed that both resorts are prepared and scheduled to open their doors on Tuesday, offering relief to visitors, especially those from Buenos Aires embarking on their final week of vacation.

Pablo Tijeras, head of the Municipal Urban Guard in Las Heras, confirmed that "everything is in condition for them to open their doors this Tuesday. The two snow parks have been coordinated and will be operational." Visitors can expect initial activities such as skiing on base slopes, sledding, and enjoying panoramic views. As weather conditions permit, higher-altitude slopes will gradually be opened.

Meanwhile, in the southern part of the province, the renowned Las Leñas ski resort, one of Latin America's largest, is already fully operational, with most of its slopes opened last Saturday. Access to Las Leñas via Route 222 requires caution and the mandatory use of snow chains. Provincial authorities are reminding the public to exercise care when traveling in the area, especially after two women sustained injuries from unauthorized sledding incidents on non-designated slopes.
