Messi Ends Argentina Career After World Cup Heartbreak

Lionel Messi wanted a storybook ending with Argentina. Instead, a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final became the final match of his international career.

The 39-year-old announced his retirement on Instagram, saying the decision hurt but that he understood the time had come. He said he had always given everything for Argentina and wanted to leave space for younger players.
