Messi makes history as first player to start three World Cup finals

Lionel Messi has etched his name further into football history by becoming the first player to start in three World Cup finals. The Argentine superstar achieved this milestone when he was named in the starting lineup for the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, held at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Messi, who captained Argentina in the previous finals of Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022, wore the captain's armband once again for the crucial match against the Spanish team. This appearance adds another significant chapter to his illustrious World Cup career.

In addition to his record for starting finals, Messi also drew level with Brazilian legend Cafu as the second player to feature in three World Cup finals. Cafu, however, was a substitute in the 1994 final against Italy, entering the game in the 14th minute due to an injury to Jorginho. He later played in the 1998 final and captained Brazil to victory in the 2002 final.

Furthermore, Messi continued to extend his own record for the most matches played in World Cup tournaments, bringing his total to 34 appearances. This remarkable longevity and consistent performance at the highest level underscore his enduring impact on the sport.
