Meta pulls Instagram AI image tool after privacy backlash

Meta abruptly removed its generative AI image tool, Muse Image, from Instagram after a wave of global complaints about privacy and data security. The tool, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, allowed users to create and alter images and videos by integrating content from public accounts, including faces, without explicit authorization.

Meta acknowledged the tool "did not meet expectations" and is no longer available, implicitly admitting user discontent. The feature was automatically enabled for users by default. This move by the tech giant ignited alarms across various professional sectors, notably the U.S. actors' union, SAG-AFTRA. The union deemed the implementation "reckless" and warned of the dangers of creating non-consensual digital replicas and deepfakes.

In a formal statement, SAG-AFTRA declared that "anything less than explicit, visible consent for these types of uses of Instagram users' images is unacceptable." Actress Hannah Einbinder also urged the public to review their profiles due to exposure risks. Following the software's removal, SAG-AFTRA spokespeople expressed satisfaction with Meta's correction, calling the suspension a responsible action against the potential harm of unchecked use of graphic identities.

Despite the removal of Muse Image, discussions surrounding the training of AI models with user-generated content persist. Instagram's Help Center states that users can manually restrict the use of their materials for future Meta AI chatbot developments.
