Mexican Duck Returns to Lake Huayamilpas as Ecosystem Recovers in Coyoacán

The iconic Mexican duck has reappeared at Lake Huayamilpas in Coyoacán, marking a significant positive development in the area's ecological recovery. The arrival of three of these ducks, observed by delighted visitors, signifies a hopeful turn for the emblematic lake, which had been choked by invasive water lentils.

This resurgence follows a concentrated, month-long cleaning and rehabilitation effort. The project, a joint initiative involving the Coyoacán mayor's office and federal authorities, particularly the Navy, has focused on restoring the lake's health. The presence of migratory birds like the Mexican duck is a clear indicator that the ecosystem is beginning to rebound.

Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez expressed his satisfaction with the progress, highlighting the community's involvement. The current phase involves meticulous water analysis to scientifically determine the next steps for the lake's complete restoration. This scientific approach aims to ensure the long-term health and balance of the local flora and fauna.

Specialists noted that the lake previously had a skewed sex ratio among its duck population, leading to aggression. The rehabilitation project aims to rebalance this, fostering a healthier and more harmonious environment for the ducks. We are very happy with the residents of the Huayamilpas Ecological Park because a month ago we started the cleaning and rehabilitation work in this beautiful place, work that we have divided into several stages; one of them is the cleaning of the lake with the help of federal and local authorities, especially the Secretariat of the Navy.
