Mexican Eva Espejo named Ecuador women's football coach

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) has announced Eva Espejo of Mexico as the new head coach for the women's national team. She takes over from Eduardo Moscoso, who will now lead the U-20 women's team. Espejo is recognized for her leadership and work methodology, having previously coached Rayadas in Mexico's Liga MX Femenil, where she won a title in 2021 and was named Mexico's best coach by the IFFHS in 2022.

Espejo's coaching profile emphasizes integral work with young players, sustainable processes, and a modern vision of the game, which the FEF believes will strengthen the national team, known as 'La Tri.' Her technical staff will include Cristina González Zepeda as assistant coach, another experienced Mexican coach. The FEF stated that part of the existing team will remain, supplemented by a multidisciplinary group to ensure continuity and support for the new process.

The appointment comes as Ecuador prepares for crucial matches in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup qualifiers. The team will face Chile on June 5 in Santiago and Argentina on June 9 in Quito. Ecuador currently sits fifth in the standings with 8 points, trailing Chile (10 points) and Venezuela (11 points). Argentina and Colombia lead with 14 points each, holding the direct qualification spots for the 2027 Women's World Cup. Chile and Venezuela are currently in the playoff positions, with Ecuador's upcoming matches being critical for their qualification hopes.
