Mexican fans serenade England team before World Cup clash

Mexican fans attempted to disrupt the sleep of the England national football team with a pre-dawn "serenade" outside their hotel in Santa Fe, Mexico City, on July 5, 2026. Around 45 supporters gathered near the Marriott hotel in the early hours, employing fireworks, loud music, and plastic trumpets in an effort to disturb the players before their crucial World Cup Round of 16 match against Mexico.

The incident echoed a similar event involving the Ecuadorian team earlier in the tournament. However, security measures were in place, preventing the fans from reaching the hotel directly. A spokesperson for the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Security stated that the gathering, reportedly organized by an influencer, remained on a pedestrian bridge about 200 meters away. The group chanted for approximately half an hour before dispersing without any reported incidents.

England, nicknamed "The Three Lions," arrived in Mexico on July 3 and has been preparing for the high-stakes match. The game against Mexico is scheduled for July 5 at the Estadio Ciudad de México. The security presence was notably tight around the team's hotel upon their arrival.
