Mexican lawmakers hold minute of silence for Zenyazen Escobar and honor his public service

Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies interrupted its regular session to honor Morena lawmaker Zenyazen Escobar García, who died on Sept. 4, 2026.

The minute of silence was not listed on the day’s agenda. Morena lawmaker Margarita Corro requested it at the start of Tuesday’s session, identifying Escobar as the coordinator of the Veracruz delegation. Chamber President Raúl Bolaños Cacho approved the request and asked lawmakers to stand.

The chamber’s political coordination board had already agreed to hold a tribute for Escobar the following day. In granting the immediate request, Cacho Cue expressed condolences to the legislator’s family and friends on behalf of the lower house.

“This Chamber expresses its deepest condolences for the death of our colleague, Zenyazen Roberto Escobar García, a lawmaker from the Morena parliamentary group representing electoral district 16 of Córdoba, Veracruz,” the statement said. It also recognized his career as a teacher, state education secretary and member of Congress.

The chamber said it was following the investigations by authorities into the events of Sept. 4 in Veracruz. After the minute of silence, lawmakers moved on to the review of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s second government report.
