Mexican lawmakers meet with industry leaders on environmental initiative

Members of the Environment and Natural Resources Commission in Mexico's Chamber of Deputies have initiated a dialogue with industry leaders to discuss a significant environmental reform. The proposed changes to the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection (LGEEPA) were put forward by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, aiming to harmonize development and productivity with environmental protection and circular economy principles.

During the meeting, representatives from the National Chamber of the Manufacturing Industry (Canacintra) and various business sectors stressed the importance of factoring in the reform's potential effects on industrial competitiveness, supply chains, and the overall national economy. Their input seeks to ensure that environmental regulations do not unduly hinder economic growth or the viability of existing industries.

Federal Deputy Jesús Cuanalo, secretary of the commission, pledged to foster further working groups involving all relevant sectors. He committed to incorporating technical perspectives and building consensus throughout the legislative process. Cuanalo also highlighted the necessity of including indigenous communities and their traditional knowledge, given their close relationship with natural resources, alongside environmental specialists and industry stakeholders.

This consultation marks the second such dialogue, following an earlier session in August that brought together environmental organizations and officials from the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). The commission's approach underscores a commitment to a collaborative legislative process, seeking to balance environmental goals with the practical concerns of the industrial sector and diverse societal groups.
