Mexico breaks Guinness World Record with massive fan wave ahead of World Cup

Mexico City erupted in a sea of green on Saturday as tens of thousands of fans participated in a massive human wave, setting a new Guinness World Record. The event, held on the iconic Paseo de la Reforma, celebrated the imminent start of the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting.

Officially recognized by Guinness World Records judges, the "Ola Mundial" (World Wave) surpassed the previous record set in Lisbon in 2007, which gathered over 8,000 people. The atmosphere was festive, with participants donning the national colors and traditional Mexican attire.

Alejandra Frausto, Mexico City's Secretary of Tourism, declared, "We achieved the largest wave in the world." The event drew a significant crowd, transforming a major avenue into a vibrant street party just five days before the tournament kicks off.

Despite ongoing social issues in Mexico, the human wave served as a moment of collective celebration. Iván Orozco, a 44-year-old fan, noted the contrast but emphasized the importance of such events. "This is a party, it's celebrated every four years, and it seems very viable for people to come and enjoy," he said, highlighting the Mexican people's enthusiasm for national celebrations.

Fans expressed excitement about the World Cup returning to Mexico, particularly the prospect of matches at the historic Estadio Azteca. "I get goosebumps" said Lupita Mercado, anticipating the chance to experience another World Cup in her country. The event underscored the passion for football in Mexico and set an energetic tone for the upcoming global tournament.
