Mexico celebrates Cinema Day with free screenings nationwide

Mexico is gearing up to celebrate the Día del Cine Mexicano (Mexican Cinema Day) on August 29th, 2026, with a nationwide program offering free screenings of diverse cinematic works. The celebration aims to honor the country's rich film heritage and make it accessible to a wider audience.

The festivities will extend beyond the official day, running until August 29th. Screenings will be held in various physical locations, broadcast on public television channels, and available through the online platform nuestrocine.mx. The program includes a wide array of genres, featuring fiction features, documentaries, and short films. Notably, many selections will be presented with subtitles in Mexican Sign Language and audio descriptions to ensure inclusivity.

Established by the Chamber of Deputies in 2018, the day commemorates the first public film screening in Mexico City in the late 19th century. This year's celebration promises a packed schedule. The Cineteca Nacional's three venues (Xoco, De las Artes, and Chapultepec) will host eight feature films and 11 shorts over the weekend.

Additionally, the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) is launching a permanent, free YouTube channel featuring short films produced by the institution. The Filmoteca de la UNAM will present classic Mexican films, including "El tren fantasma" (1926) with live musical accompaniment on August 29th. The Cinematógrafo del Chopo, also part of UNAM, will offer programming from August 17th to 21st, including the 1935 film "Vámonos con Pancho Villa."
