Mexico City borough to remove illegally parked scooters, expand crackdown to other vehicles

The Miguel Hidalgo borough in Mexico City is launching an operation to remove improperly parked electric scooters that have become a nuisance for residents. Mauricio Tabe, the head of the borough, announced the initiative, which aims to reclaim public spaces from the growing number of these shared mobility devices.

In the Polanco neighborhood, a popular and often congested area, authorities have already removed approximately 90 scooters. This action was taken in direct response to requests from local residents who have expressed frustration with scooters being left haphazardly on sidewalks and in other public areas, hindering pedestrian flow and creating visual clutter.

Tabe warned that the operation would extend beyond scooters. The borough will also be implementing sanctions against motorcycles and other vehicles that are found to be illegally occupying public spaces. This broader approach seeks to address multiple forms of encroachment on sidewalks and pedestrian zones, ensuring a more orderly and accessible urban environment for everyone.

The initiative underscores a growing challenge in many cities worldwide as shared micro-mobility services proliferate. While offering convenient transportation options, the lack of proper parking infrastructure and user accountability can lead to significant public space conflicts.
