Mexico City Culture Secretary Postpones Casa del Poeta Events Amid Dialogue

A dialogue aimed at shaping the future of the Casa del Poeta Ramón López Velarde in Mexico City saw a modest turnout of around 20 people, primarily local residents and artists.

The meeting, convened by Mexico City's Secretary of Culture, Ana Francis Mor, focused on proposals for programming and concerns regarding a planned transformation of the cultural space into a cabaret. Participants also raised questions about its management and the reactivation of its cultural life.

Edgardo Bermejo Mora, acting as mediator, announced that all scheduled cultural and literary activities would be postponed for several weeks. He also stated that no appointments for the Casa would be made while the dialogue and consultation process continues. A second meeting is planned for the following week, with hopes that the Committee in Defense of the Casa del Poeta will attend.

Jesús Galindo, director of the Institute for the Defense of Cultural Rights of Mexico City, attended as an observer representing Secretary Mor. He described the initial forum as one of "listening," emphasizing the openness to the entire poetic, literary, and Roma neighborhood community. However, when questioned about the budget, Galindo admitted that no specific budget has yet been allocated for the Casa, noting that the Secretariat of Culture only received it on December 12 and that the annual budget is determined later in the year. He assured transparency once the figures are available.
