Mexico City enforces strict traffic rules for 2026 World Cup

Mexico City is gearing up for the 2026 World Cup by reinforcing its traffic regulations to manage the anticipated surge in visitors and vehicles. The capital anticipates a significant influx of fans, posing a challenge to mobility, particularly in the southern zone where the stadium is located.

To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow, authorities are deploying 170 additional officers from the Banking and Industrial Police and the Auxiliary Police. These officers will be empowered to issue citations and enhance surveillance across the city's 13 boroughs. The primary goal is to improve circulation and maintain order during the global sporting event.

Drivers are urged to exercise patience and familiarize themselves with key traffic rules to avoid penalties. Common infractions include speeding, failing to use seatbelts, using mobile phones while driving, illegal parking, and driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. Strict enforcement will be in place, with penalties ranging from fines equivalent to multiple Units of Measurement and Update (UMA) to points deducted from driving licenses and even administrative arrest for certain offenses.

Specific regulations include respecting speed limits, ensuring all passengers wear seatbelts, prohibiting mobile phone use while operating a vehicle, and forbidding parking on pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, or exclusive transit routes. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs carries severe consequences, including administrative arrest and license suspension. Additionally, circulating on exclusive public transport lanes is strictly prohibited.
