Mexico City Extends Tax Regularization Program Through September Amid Strong Revenue Growth

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada has extended the city's fiscal regularization program for an additional three months, now set to conclude in September. This decision comes in response to the program's positive reception among residents, who have been encouraged to settle outstanding tax obligations. Brugada stated that the extension aims to provide more opportunities for citizens to take advantage of the program and become current with their tax payments. The announcement was made during the presentation of Mexico City's public finance report for the first half of 2026. The report highlighted a significant 12% increase in revenue compared to projections, totaling over 183 billion pesos. Officials noted a record collection of local tax revenue during this period. Specifically, property tax collection saw a substantial increase of 7 billion pesos since 2024, even without raising the tax rate and while maintaining various subsidies. The Secretary of Administration and Finance, Juan Pablo de Botton, reported a 23.7% rise in property tax revenue and a 16.4% increase in payroll tax. He also pointed out an unprecedented number of early property tax payments this year, amounting to nearly 13 billion pesos, with over half of the population paying their full year's property tax by February. This strong fiscal performance underscores the effectiveness of the city's revenue collection strategies.
