Mexico City mayors back Sheinbaum, Brugada for World Cup activities

Mexico City's 11 mayors from the Morena, PVEM, and PT parties have publicly backed President Claudia Sheinbaum and Mayor Clara Brugada, vowing to support all activities related to the 2026 World Cup. They asserted that the capital is well-prepared to welcome the world, citing coordinated efforts that have strengthened security, mobility, public services, and the revitalization of public spaces.

The mayors view the World Cup as a significant opportunity to display the city's rich cultural and historical heritage. They also see it as a chance to demonstrate the positive outcomes of the current administration's "transformation" in terms of infrastructure and public well-being. The officials reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration to ensure Mexico City becomes an exemplary host for the global tournament.

Berenice Hernández, the mayor of Tláhuac, emphasized the months of coordinated work under the Mayor's leadership to prepare for the event. She stated that the city is ready to guarantee security, mobility, services, hospitality, and dignified public spaces for international visitors. Hernández described Mexico City as the "capital of the Fourth Transformation and of our people, the people of Mexico who are brothers to all nations."

Recent improvements highlighted include a new 34-kilometer cycle path, a floating garden, a new trolleybus route connecting areas near the Azteca Stadium, 17 new light rail trains, and extensive urban renewal projects in neighborhoods surrounding the stadium. These developments aim to enhance the experience for both residents and the expected influx of tourists.
