Mexico City police deliver baby during emergency transfer after mother goes into labor in patrol car

Mexico City police officers delivered a baby in a patrol car after a pregnant woman’s vehicle broke down on the way to a hospital.

The 27-year-old woman was experiencing strong contractions in the San Miguel Chapultepec neighborhood, in the Miguel Hidalgo borough. Her husband approached officers at the corner of Juan de la Barrera Street and Chapultepec Avenue and explained that the couple needed urgent help.

The officers decided to continue the journey in a patrol car because the birth appeared imminent. During the transfer, they used their first-aid training to assist the woman and received the newborn girl.

After the baby was born, the officers secured her and continued to a specialist hospital. Mother and daughter entered the hospital minutes later for medical care.

Mexico City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security said its officers receive first-aid training so they can respond to emergencies and help people whose health or lives may be at risk.
