Mexico City: Protests and gatherings planned for August 28

Mexico City residents are set to participate in a series of marches and gatherings this Friday, August 28, addressing a range of social and political concerns. The Secretariat of Citizen Security has outlined the planned mobilizations, which will impact various parts of the capital.

A significant march is expected to depart from the Palacio de Bellas Artes at 9:30 AM, heading towards the Congress of the Union and Palacio Nacional. This demonstration, focused on "dignified death," aims to deliver over 180,000 collected signatures in support of the "Ley Trasciende." This proposed law seeks to recognize an individual's right to decide on end-of-life matters.

Other groups will also be active. Siembra Cultura plans to meet at 9 AM in the Plaza de Lectura José Saramago to promote reliable information about cannabis, risk reduction, and user well-being. Additionally, the organization Primero de Agosto will gather at the Attorney General's Office at 9 AM to submit a clarification regarding the case of a 21-year-old cyclist killed by a Metrobús vehicle in February 2021.

Further demonstrations include retired IPN (National Polytechnic Institute) employees gathering at 10 AM at the "Jaime Torres Bodet" Cultural Center to demand payment of their overdue retirement benefits. The Confederation of Students will hold a press conference at the Secretariat of Government at 10 AM, calling for the unconditional release of a human rights defender associated with the Carmen Serdán Rural Normal Student Council.

Additional gatherings are scheduled for later in the day. Amigos del Refugio Franciscano will convene at 11 AM at the Junta de Asistencia Privada to demand an audit of the board, alleging illegal land sales and inadequate care for animals. Representatives from the "Libertad para Morir" initiative will also meet at 11 AM at the National Center for the Arts and the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at UNAM to collect signatures for a "Medical Assistance to Die" proposal in Mexico City. Finally, the Plataforma 420 group will hold midday events at the Monumento a la Madre and at Gran Canal and Circuito Interior for cannabis rights advocacy and signature collection.
