Mexico City Reopens Renovated Light Rail System 'El Ajolote'

Mexico City's light rail system, affectionately known as "El Ajolote," has officially reopened its doors to commuters after an extensive nine-month renovation period. The relaunch heralds a new era for public transportation in the capital, marked by the integration of 17 state-of-the-art new trains designed to enhance the passenger experience.

Users returning to the system have noted a marked improvement in passenger distribution within the newly coupled trains, which can link together to significantly boost capacity per trip. While the time spent waiting on platforms has remained largely consistent, the ability to accommodate more passengers onboard is seen as a key benefit. This modernization effort aims to alleviate congestion and provide a more efficient service for the millions who rely on the light rail daily.

The ambitious renovation project represents a substantial investment of 2.386 billion pesos. A significant portion of this funding, 1.4 billion pesos, was allocated to acquiring the 17 new trains. These modern vehicles, manufactured by the Chinese consortium CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive, feature double cabins and the innovative coupling capability. Additionally, 800 million pesos were invested in a new traffic control and regulation system, with another 200 million pesos dedicated to the refurbishment of eight stations along the line.

The reopening ceremony was led by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, coinciding with the one-month countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The "El Ajolote" light rail, now equipped with enhanced capacity and modern technology, is poised to serve the city more effectively, demonstrating Mexico City's commitment to improving its public infrastructure and transportation networks.
