Mexico City to See Multiple Demonstrations on Thursday, September 3

Several organizations plan to hold demonstrations at locations across Mexico City on Thursday, Sept. 3, according to the city’s Secretariat of Citizen Security.

The National Union of Machinery Workers will begin gathering at 9 a.m. at the Angel of Independence, the Senate, the Interior Ministry and the Chamber of Deputies. The group is calling for an end to what it describes as arbitrary operations and seizures, the return of confiscated machines, and regulations that distinguish its equipment from criminal activity. It also wants stable conditions for its work and protection for members’ income and dignity.

The Alliance for the Defense of Pensions and Marriage will visit the National Palace, the Interior Ministry, the Senate, the Energy Ministry and the Federal Electricity Commission. It plans to submit more than 386,000 signatures collected through Change.org, seeking legal certainty and respect for the acquired rights of retired workers at national institutions.

The UNAM Workers’ Union will gather at the Chamber of Deputies at 9:30 a.m. to demand a 20% wage increase, a contract review, respect for labor rights and recognition of university work. The Las Tonantzin collective will meet at the Santa Martha Social Reintegration Center at 10 a.m. to support a hearing involving a victim of family violence and demand that the alleged perpetrator be judged under the law.

The Anti-Imperialist and Anti-Fascist Front will protest at the U.S. Embassy at 11 a.m. It is demanding the immediate release of Venezuela’s former president and his wife, whom the group says were detained during a U.S. military incursion on Jan. 3, as well as an end to the U.S. economic blockade against Venezuela. Platform 420 will collect signatures and distribute information on cannabis rights, harm reduction, human rights and cannabis legislation. Regeneración Sindical will set up signature-collection tables throughout the day at the Institute for Returning Stolen Assets to the People, targeting the secretary general of the Mexican Electrical Workers’ Union.
