Mexico registers lowest homicide rate in eight years with 21 killings on Tuesday

Mexico recorded its lowest number of intentional homicides in eight years on Tuesday, July 21, with a total of 21 deaths nationwide. Guerrero and Jalisco led the country with three homicides each, followed by the State of Mexico, Guanajuato, and Tabasco, each reporting two. Several other states, including Baja California, Mexico City, Colima, Morelos, Oaxaca, Puebla, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz, registered one homicide each. The remaining states reported no intentional homicides.

This significant drop follows a trend of decreasing violence. On July 14, Marcela Figueroa Franco, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), announced that the daily average of intentional homicides in Mexico had fallen by 48% between September 2024 and June 2026. The average decreased from 86.9 to 45.4 victims per day, making June 2026 the month with the lowest average intentional homicides since 2015.
