Mexico’s anti-corruption agency opens investigation after salmonella outbreak at General Hospital

Mexico’s Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Government has opened an investigation into a suspected health incident at the cafeteria serving resident doctors at the General Hospital of Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga.”

The inquiry began on Sept. 3 after reports that resident doctors had developed gastrointestinal symptoms and that some required hospital treatment. The internal control office at the Health Secretariat is seeking details from hospital departments, including the number of people affected, their medical progress, the measures taken and the epidemiological studies conducted.

On Sept. 4, officials carried out a verification visit to collect documents, testimony and evidence. They also reviewed how food was received, stored, prepared and distributed, along with compliance with applicable health measures.

The cafeteria has been closed since Sept. 1. The investigation remains in progress, with laboratory results and additional information still pending. Officials stressed that they have not reached a definitive conclusion about the cause of the incident or any responsibility by public servants.

The internal control office is also examining the possible responsibility of the private company that provides the cafeteria service under contract. The Secretariat said it would continue to follow the case with objectivity, technical rigor and respect for the law.
