Mexico's President Sheinbaum urges respectful World Cup celebrations

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for respectful and responsible celebrations during and after the national team's World Cup match against Ecuador. The plea comes amid widespread public enthusiasm and large gatherings following the team's victories in the tournament.

Sheinbaum specifically addressed the issue of litter left in public spaces after previous celebrations, urging fans to clean up after themselves. "It is important to always respect everyone else and also that they pick up their trash when they leave," she stated during her daily press conference. The president noted that tons of waste were left behind after recent wins.

While acknowledging the "joy" surrounding the team's performance, Sheinbaum also condemned the behavior of fans who gathered outside Ecuador's hotel on Monday night, singing songs. She emphasized the need for respect towards all other nations and participants in the international event.

The president expressed confidence in the Mexican people's ability to celebrate responsibly, highlighting that previous large gatherings, involving over 800,000 people, had resulted in no major incidents or victims. Mexico is set to face Ecuador in the Round of 16 at the Estadio Ciudad de México.
