Mexico’s PRI backs euthanasia with strict safeguards to protect individual choice

Mexico City’s PRI coordinator, Tania Larios, said her caucus would vote in favor of euthanasia, but only under strict conditions. Any law, she said, must guarantee an individual’s wishes and must not turn euthanasia into an alternative to a health system that cannot provide medicines.

Larios welcomed a citizen initiative promoting the right to a dignified death and said she hoped it would not be shelved. She also said the PRI would eventually promote its own proposal, designed to respect the wishes of people in the capital and prevent euthanasia from being applied indiscriminately.

It must be very well regulated and very well founded so that it is truly a person’s wishes, and nothing more, that creates this right to a dignified death.

She sharply criticized Morena while making the case for safeguards. Larios accused the party of failing to supply prescriptions and damaging Mexico’s public health institutions, the IMSS and ISSSTE. She said lawmakers needed to be cautious because, in her view, deficient medical care could create a risk of coercive or abusive use of euthanasia laws.

Larios also endorsed a broad opposition coalition in Mexico City and criticized Movimiento Ciudadano for rejecting such an alliance with Morena. She welcomed PAN president Jorge Romero’s openness to forming local coalitions, saying Mexico City could become a successful example of cooperation between the PRI and PAN.

She argued that the PRI would be essential to defeating Morena in the capital in 2027, saying the party was indispensable to winning mayoral governments across the city.
