Mexico's Security Cabinet Ready for 'Narco-Candidates' Ahead of 2027 Elections

Mexico's security apparatus is gearing up to scrutinize candidates for potential links to organized crime as the nation approaches the 2027 elections. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the security cabinet is ready to receive and investigate any requests from the electoral institute concerning such allegations.

Sheinbaum explained that the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) continuously monitors alerts related to money laundering, both from within Mexico and abroad. These ongoing investigations are crucial for identifying any illicit financial activities connected to political aspirations.

Recent changes to electoral law have established a special commission within the National Electoral Institute (INE). This commission will formally request information from the security cabinet and the Attorney General's office to vet candidates. "The security cabinet is already prepared to receive any request from the INE," Sheinbaum stated, noting that the process will be initiated once the electoral process officially begins.

The president also committed to providing updates on the recovery of approximately $500,000 in funds linked to former official Genaro García Luna, which have now been transferred to the national treasury.
