Mexico thump Serbia 5-1 to complete World Cup preparations

Mexico concluded their World Cup preparations with a resounding 5-1 victory over Serbia in their final warm-up match on Thursday. The win provides a significant confidence boost ahead of their tournament opener next week.

Serbia took an early lead in the 19th minute when Petar Stanic capitalized on a defensive error and a fortunate deflection. However, Mexico responded in the 34th minute, with defender Johan Vasquez heading home a goal from a Brian Gutierrez delivery after sustained pressure from the visitors. Mexico then secured the lead deep into first-half stoppage time, benefiting from an own goal by Serbia's Stefan Bukinac.

In the second half, Mexico extended their advantage. Raul Jimenez scored from close range after his initial effort rebounded off the post and into the net. The hosts further increased their lead in the 72nd minute when Adem Avdic turned an Alexis Vega corner into his own net. The rout was completed just before the 90-minute mark by Luis Chavez, who fired in a superb long-range strike.

The Nemesio Diez stadium was illuminated by fireworks at the final whistle, marking a stylish end to Mexico's preparations. They are set to begin the World Cup, which they are co-hosting with the United States and Canada, next Thursday against South Africa.
