Microchip Technology forecasts upbeat quarterly revenue on strong demand

Microchip Technology anticipates a robust second quarter, projecting revenue and profit to surpass Wall Street's expectations. The company attributes this optimistic outlook to a significant upswing in demand for its chips. These components are crucial for AI data centers, a sector experiencing explosive growth. Additionally, the industrial, automotive, and aerospace markets are showing a cyclical recovery, further bolstered by geopolitical tensions that are fueling defense spending.

For the upcoming second quarter, Microchip forecasts revenue between $1.59 billion and $1.62 billion, exceeding the average analyst estimate of $1.55 billion. The company's adjusted earnings per share projection of $0.91 to $0.95 also outpaced the analysts' average estimate of $0.79. These projections follow a strong first quarter, where Microchip reported revenue of $1.49 billion, surpassing the $1.46 billion estimate, and adjusted profit of $0.76 per share, beating the $0.69 estimate.

Despite the positive financial outlook, Microchip Technology's stock experienced a decline, dropping 4% in after-hours trading. This movement occurred shortly after a peer, Onsemi, also forecast its third-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations, driven by similar demand for AI data center chips.
