Microsoft tops quarterly cloud growth estimates, easing spending concerns

Microsoft surpassed Wall Street's expectations for quarterly cloud revenue growth, signaling that its substantial investments in AI infrastructure are yielding positive results as capacity constraints begin to ease. The company's Azure cloud-computing business saw a 43% revenue increase in its fiscal fourth quarter, exceeding the 39.98% consensus estimate from analysts.

CEO Satya Nadella highlighted the milestone, stating, "This year, Azure revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time, and Microsoft 365 Copilot reached over 30 million paid seats, reflecting the confidence customers are placing in us to power their AI transformation." This strong performance could alleviate investor concerns regarding the company's high data center outlays and the potential for AI tools to disrupt its established productivity software offerings.

The positive results follow a strong quarter from rival Google Cloud, which reported an 82% surge in its cloud revenue. Microsoft's cloud business also reported a contracted backlog of $678 billion at the end of the quarter, up from $627 billion previously. The number of paid seats for M365 Copilot grew to over 30 million, up from 20 million in the prior quarter. Despite these successes, Microsoft has forecast significant capital expenditures, projecting $190 billion for the calendar year, part of a broader trend of massive tech outlays that have strained cash flows and raised concerns about overcapacity.
