Middle-Belt Tigers win inaugural Nigeria Super League in thrilling final

The Middle-Belt Tigers clinched the inaugural Nigeria Super League championship title, edging out the Southern Sharks by a narrow six-run margin in a thrilling final on Sunday. The match at the TBS Oval brought a dramatic close to the two-week tournament, which featured 20 games and highlighted the burgeoning talent and competitive spirit of cricket in Nigeria.

The Tigers, after winning the toss, posted a respectable 104/5 in their allotted 10 overs. The Southern Sharks mounted a courageous chase, staying in contention until the final over. Isesele Odion Evangel scored 26 off 21 balls, and captain Isaac Okpe added a quick 15 off seven deliveries, with Kenneth Boniface and Durotoye Gideon also contributing. Despite their efforts, the Tigers held their nerve to restrict the Sharks to 98/7, securing a dramatic victory.

Earlier, the Northern Lions secured third place by defeating the Central Eagles by 32 runs. The tournament also celebrated its top individual talents. Solomon Chilemanya of the Middle-Belt Tigers led the batting charts with 172 runs, while his teammate Ndubudem Elochukwu was named best bowler with 14 wickets. Ridwan Kareem of the Northern Lions was the best fielder with six dismissals, and Ismail Abdullahi of the Southern Sharks received the Outstanding Young Player award.

Despite losing the final, Isaac Danladi of the Southern Sharks was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for his all-around performance, recording 168 runs and 13 wickets. All six participating teams shared in the tournament's prize pool of N13.25 million, in addition to individual award cash prizes. The league's successful maiden edition underscores the continued growth and increasing popularity of cricket in Nigeria.
