Middle East: Iran, Oman agree on Hormuz transit route; communication with Khamenei difficult

Iran and Oman have reached an agreement on a new transit route for ships navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Iranian officials announced Wednesday. The deal, however, is contingent on "third parties" not obstructing the process. This development comes as a British maritime agency reported explosions heard by a tanker transiting the strait near Oman.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian described communication with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei as "very difficult at the moment." Khamenei, who has not appeared publicly since his appointment in March, is considered a significant asset despite these communication challenges, according to Pezeshkian. He was reportedly injured in attacks that occurred on February 28th.

In a separate incident, an Israeli airstrike targeted a prayer hall in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, resulting in one death and eleven injuries. The Israeli military stated its actions were in response to alleged ceasefire violations by the pro-Iranian Hezbollah group. Lebanon has also initiated new talks with Israel in Rome, under American sponsorship, aiming for successive Israeli troop withdrawals from southern Lebanon.
