Middle East Strait Crisis: Trump threatens to bomb infrastructure, Iran warns of blocking oil exports

The United States has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening to destroy Iranian bridges or power plants if Tehran attacks vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The declaration by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday escalates tensions in a critical global energy chokepoint.

In response, Iran's joint operations command declared that any U.S. aggression, including attacks on its infrastructure, would be met with a "powerful and decisive response." Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reiterated this stance on social media, stating, "Our defense principles are clear: an eye for an eye. Any aggression against Iran, including attacks on our infrastructure, will be met with a strong and decisive response from Iran."

Adding to the regional instability, Iran's ally, the Houthi movement in Yemen, has threatened to block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another vital energy transport route. This threat has already prompted five oil tankers in the Red Sea to alter course to avoid the waterway. Three other tankers carrying Saudi crude oil, bound for China and India, have reportedly turned back.

The dual threats to the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are driving up oil prices, which have reached a nearly six-week high. The rerouting of tankers around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would significantly increase shipping times and costs, as vessels would need to navigate around the southern tip of Africa or through the Suez Canal. This situation places additional pressure on U.S. forces, who are currently focused on deterring attacks from Tehran.
