Migrant Camps Burned, Clashes with Police, Soldiers Attacked: Situation Escalates in Ceuta

The Spanish enclave of Ceuta is experiencing heightened tensions as local residents have clashed with police and attacked military personnel. The unrest, occurring a month after a massive influx of migrants from Morocco, has seen several incidents, including the burning of migrants' belongings on a beach where they had been camping.

Protests against the conditions have escalated, with demonstrators attempting to block aid organizations from distributing food to hundreds of migrants. Brandishing Spanish flags, protesters chanted slogans demanding the migrants leave and denouncing the Red Cross. Police intervened to disperse the crowds.

Spanish authorities have called for calm following the incidents. Residents are protesting security and hygiene concerns, and they accuse the government of abandoning them. The situation remains volatile as thousands of migrants, who arrived in a sudden surge, continue to struggle for basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

Further complicating the situation, a military vehicle carrying four soldiers was ambushed by approximately 70 migrants who threw stones, forcing the soldiers to flee and seek police assistance. Twelve Moroccan nationals were arrested in connection with these incidents, during which one soldier sustained minor injuries. The high tension in the city is attributed to a perceived lack of response from authorities.
