The match followed a familiar script for Spain in this tournament, with Merino coming off the bench to deliver a crucial strike. Belgium had managed to equalize, ending Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simón's impressive 649-minute clean sheet streak in World Cups. Charles De Ketelaere scored Belgium's goal, marking the first time Spain conceded in the tournament.

Spain had taken the lead through Fabián Ruiz in the first half after a save from Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
