Milei accuses Lula of funding 'anti-Argentine campaign' amid diplomatic row

Argentine President Javier Milei has accused his Brazilian counterpart, Lula da Silva, of financing an "anti-Argentine campaign," escalating a diplomatic conflict between the two neighboring nations. The dispute ignited following campaign activities involving Milei and Flavio Bolsonaro, son of the former Brazilian president, which prompted Brazil to recall its ambassador from Buenos Aires.

Milei directly alleged that the Brazilian government provided 25% of the funding for what he termed an "anti-Argentine campaign." He referenced global reactions, which he deemed disproportionate, to certain actions by the Argentine national football team during the World Cup, accusing the country of racism. "And then they come to talk about interference," Milei stated, speaking to Radio Mitre.

The Argentine president further claimed that Brazilian involvement extended to Argentina's 2023 presidential election. He asserted that advisors sent by Lula da Silva actively participated in the campaign of Sergio Massa, Milei's opponent. Milei also drew a parallel between his own experience and Lula's, stating, "I wanted to visit my friend Jair Bolsonaro and they didn't let me, but here the ex-convict [Lula] came to greet the convict [Cristina Fernández de Kirchner], didn't he? Nobody prohibited him from anything; however, they didn't let me visit my friend, who is also unjustly imprisoned."

This exchange highlights a significant diplomatic rift, fueled by ideological differences and past grievances. Milei's administration has consistently criticized what it views as state interference and protectionism, while Lula's government has emphasized regional cooperation and solidarity. The situation remains tense as both leaders engage in public accusations.
