Milei again strains ties with Brazil by reposting new criticisms against Lula da Silva

Argentine President Javier Milei has once again strained relations with Brazil, his country's key Mercosur partner. This latest escalation occurred as Argentina's ambassador was preparing to depart Brazil, a move that followed Brazil's decision to reduce diplomatic ties to the level of charge d'affaires.

Instead of de-escalating the bilateral conflict, Milei used his social media account to repost several messages containing strong criticism, including insults, directed at the Brazilian president. One reposted message from U.S. Republican congressman Carlos A. Giménez labeled Brazilian President Lula da Silva a "puerco" (pig) and alleged that Lula's "hatred and contempt" towards U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stemmed from his bosses in the "castro-communist dictatorship."

The congressman had accompanied his message with a video of Lula da Silva's statements, in which the Brazilian leader described Blinken, a close associate of Donald Trump, as a "Bolsonarist" and a "frustrated Latin American" who allegedly "hates Cuba, Colombia, and Brazil." Lula suggested Blinken acted differently from how he discussed matters with Trump.

In line with this attack on the Brazilian president, who had previously downgraded bilateral relations due to Milei's verbal aggressions, Milei also shared posts from the publication La Derecha Diario. One of these posts, attributed to user Kalinna An, stated that "Lula should be imprisoned," referencing a corruption case for which Lula da Silva had been convicted but later released on a procedural technicality.

Another video shared by La Derecha Diario, also highlighted by Milei, featured congressman Flávio Bolsonaro criticizing Lula da Silva and Justice Alexandre de Moraes for preventing him from visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, on Father's Day. Milei himself had previously referred to De Moraes as a "bald trash" during a political convention.
