Milei: Falkland Islands belong to Argentina

Javier Milei says Argentina must act quickly before oil reserves beneath its waters fall within Britain’s reach. In a televised address to the nation, the Argentine president declared that the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina “historically and legally.”

Milei said he intends to build a new military base in Tierra del Fuego. His announcement followed the launch of an oil-drilling project by a British-Israeli company off the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.

“If we do not act decisively and quickly today, in a few months they will have the material capacity to seize the oil reserves beneath our sea,” Milei said, according to La Nacion.

The dispute has grown more tense in recent weeks. Milei is a close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, who said earlier this week that Washington could reconsider its neutrality on the Falklands question.

Residents of the islands voted almost unanimously in 2013 to remain British. Milei said that vote could not settle the issue because, in his view, the residents live on occupied land. “All arguments based on referendums held on the islands are invalid,” he said.
