Minister Musasizi Convenes Urgent Meeting to Resolve Delays On Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi Road Project

Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Henry Musasizi has convened a high-level meeting to tackle critical delays plaguing the Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi and Kisoro-Mgahinga Road Upgrading Project. This infrastructure initiative is vital for boosting tourism and economic development in the Kigezi sub-region.

The meeting, scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2026, will gather key stakeholders including the Minister of Works and Transport, the Solicitor General, the African Development Bank (AfDB) Country Director, local Members of Parliament, and district leaders. Previous discussions on June 30 and July 8, 2026, with the AfDB highlighted persistent implementation delays and contract management challenges that have stalled the project.

Minister Musasizi stated the meeting's objective is to resolve outstanding issues and establish a clear plan for resuming construction. The 34-kilometer road project, valued at Shs112.03 billion, also includes upgrades to town roads, ferry landing sites, markets, and electricity extension to Bwama Island. The contract was awarded to Samcrete Egypt Engineers and Contractors.

However, the contractor reportedly abandoned the Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi section for approximately three months, drawing criticism from local leaders, residents, and tourism operators who emphasize the project's importance for accessing key destinations like Lake Bunyonyi and Mgahinga National Park. Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama informed Parliament that the government is considering terminating Samcrete's contract due to non-performance. Friday's meeting aims to forge practical solutions among government bodies, development partners, and local leaders.
