Minister Yasmín Esquivel meets bureaucrats' leaders as they demand action on labor issues

Yasmín Esquivel told public-sector union leaders that Mexico's Federal Judiciary would support efforts to address their labor demands. The justice made the commitment during a meeting with representatives of the FSTSE central, led by Marco Antonio García Ayala.

The unions raised issues affecting more than 2 million state employees. Their demands included permanent employment status for workers, a review of general working conditions, better pensions and a review of the 2019 labor reform. They also called for the appointment of a director for Inapam, which has operated without a head for six years.

“If we do not resolve labor demands, we cannot ensure that justice exists in Mexico,” Esquivel said, according to an FSTSE statement. She also said social justice requires respect for the rights and dignity of public employees.

Representatives from the Federal Tribunal for Conciliation and Arbitration and authorities from Mexico City’s Administrative Justice Tribunal attended the discussion. Union leaders presented outstanding labor-justice issues, and Esquivel made commitments to seek solutions.

García Ayala proposed creating a labor agenda focused on the most urgent concerns and reviewing progress on each issue periodically. Esquivel said the meeting also highlighted the importance of legal certainty, the rule of law and the responsibility of institutions toward public servants.
