Minsa Creates 'Anita Moreno' Medal of Merit to Recognize Nursing Vocation

The Panamanian Ministry of Health (Minsa) has introduced the 'Anita Moreno' medal of merit, an annual distinction designed to recognize nursing professionals for their dedication, ethical standards, and commitment to patient care. Health Minister Fernando Boyd Galindo emphasized that the initiative seeks to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of nurses to the national healthcare system, highlighting their selflessness, human empathy, and unwavering service.

"Nursing is much more than a profession. It is the presence that accompanies the patient in their most vulnerable moments; their word offers hope, and their hand provides comfort, even when no one else is present," Boyd Galindo stated during the award's launch. The Archbishop of Panama, Monsignor José Domingo Ulloa, expressed gratitude to Minsa for establishing this honor in memory of Anita Moreno, whose life's work was characterized by devotion, sacrifice, and a profound commitment to alleviating patient suffering.

Archbishop Ulloa also noted the ongoing process at the Vatican for Anita Moreno's beatification, which could potentially make her Panama's first saint. The creation of the medal is formalized by Resolution 506, dated July 9, 2026, which outlines the regulations for awarding the medal to distinguished Panamanian nurses. Key requirements for nominees include an updated curriculum vitae, a Nursing degree, a minimum of 10 years of professional practice, and a clean disciplinary record.

The National Nursing Council will open the nomination period from August 3 to September 11, 2026. Application documents can be submitted to the National Directorate of Nursing at Minsa headquarters in Ancón or at regional health offices. Detailed information and requirements will be available on the Ministry of Health's website. The launch event was attended by Minsa officials, representatives from the Catholic Church, and various public and nursing sector professionals.
